Hiscock House Provincial Historic Site

The Hiscock House Provincial Historic Site invites visitors to step back into Trinity’s past, showcasing everyday life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Restored to reflect its 1910 appearance, the home shares the story of Emma Hiscock, who managed to raise six children and maintain a refined household after the loss of her husband. The site stands as a symbol of perseverance and resourcefulness in that era.

Nearby, the Lester Garland House—rebuilt on the foundations of Newfoundland’s first brick residence—offers another window into the region’s rich history.

Bonavista Historic Sites

Bonavista is a place where myth, memory, and cinema collide. The name itself carries a hint of destiny— an echo of wonder that has lured travelers, storytellers, and dreamers for centuries!

Stand on its rugged cliffs and you’ll understand why so many have whispered, “What a sight.”

This corner of Newfoundland feels like the edge of the world, yet it’s also a stage where history, legend, and imagination unfold. Wander through the town and you’ll sense its dual personality: one rooted in salt-soaked tradition, the other alive with fresh creativity. Centuries-old houses now shelter cafés buzzing with conversation, while working harbours coexist with studios, galleries, and artisanal shops.

It feels like time bends here, where the past refuses to vanish and the present insists on reinvention.

Did you know? Bonavista is known as being a...

Famous Filming Set

The same atmosphere of timelessness has caught the eye of filmmakers worldwide. Bonavista has become a backdrop for stories both magical and haunting:

🎬 Severance (2025) – The eerie landscapes of Bonavista mirror the unsettling world of this psychological series, partly directed by Ben Stiller. With a cast that includes Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, and Christopher Walken, the show explores what happens when work and personal life are brutally severed—a theme that resonates against Bonavista’s stark, moody horizon.

🎬 Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) – Disney transformed the windswept fields and dramatic cliffs of the Bonavista Peninsula into Never Land. Here, Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling and Alexander Molony as Peter Pan stepped into a reimagined tale of flight, magic, and eternal youth. Against the pounding surf and endless skies, Never Land feels not so far away.

🎬 The Shipping News (2001) – Adapted from Annie Proulx’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this film brought Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, and Cate Blanchett to Newfoundland. In Bonavista and nearby Trinity, the desolate beauty of the coastline became a mirror for a man’s struggle to rebuild his life, reminding viewers that the landscape itself can be a character.

🎬 Bayo (1985) – One of the earliest films to capture the soul of this place, Bayo tells the story of a boy torn between tradition and the possibility of something new. Set in Tickle Cove, its themes of heritage and longing are steeped in the rhythms of Bonavista Bay.

The Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic Site

The Mockbeggar Plantation traces its roots back to the 18th century, when it served as a busy fishing enterprise that helped shape Bonavista’s growth. At its heart stands the main residence, constructed in the 1870s, later becoming home to F. Gordon Bradley— one of Newfoundland’s most influential political voices and a leading figure in the Confederation debate.

Restored to reflect life in 1939, the house offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Newfoundland’s history, when the future of the province—whether to join Canada or remain self-governing—was passionately contested around kitchen tables and in public squares alike.

Dungeon Provincial Park

Dungeon Provincial Park sits within the Eastern Hyper-Oceanic Barrens ecoregion. Over thousands of years, the relentless force of the Atlantic Ocean has worn away at this rugged coastline. Two long, twisting sea caves gradually formed in the soft sedimentary rock, stretching farther inland as the waves continued their work.

In time, the caves widened and eventually merged, leaving the overhead rock too unstable to hold. When the roof finally gave way, it created what is now known as the Dungeon. Sometimes called a blowhole or gloup, this dramatic natural feature still echoes with the crash of waves below— a powerful reminder to keep a safe distance from the edge!
